Prince William enjoys the privileges of the Garter, while Harry pays a price for his freedom. Discover the differences between the two brothers.

In 2008, a historic event took place at Windsor Castle, marking a major turning point in Prince William's life. He was officially knighted as a Knight of the Order of the Garter – the oldest and highest knightly order in the United Kingdom, established by King Edward III in 1348.

Notably, William was the 1,000th knight to be inducted into this legendary list. The image of the young Prince in his deep blue velvet ceremonial robes and distinctive ostrich-feathered hat, walking in the procession, was not merely a religious or military ritual, but an implicit affirmation of his status as "the chosen one." This is an honor that royal experts believe Prince Harry, his younger brother living far away in California, will likely never have the chance to attain in the rest of his life.

This distinction does not stem from blind favoritism, but from the very nature of the Garter Medal. It is an award bestowed entirely at the will of the monarch, given to individuals who have made outstanding contributions to the nation, served the public, or achieved remarkable military accomplishments. The fact that the late Queen Elizabeth II bestowed this title upon William at a very young age is a testament to her absolute trust in her grandson – a future king being groomed.

Meanwhile, since relinquishing royal duties in 2020, Harry is no longer on the list of those who "serve the crown" in the conventional sense. Although in 2015, Harry was knighted by his grandmother as a Commander of the Royal Victorian Corps (KCVO) for his personal contributions and military career, the Garter is a completely different class, reserved only for those who remain to shoulder the fate of the monarchy.

Looking at what's happening, we see a stark contrast between responsibility and choice. The Order of the Garter has a very strict membership limit, including the highest-ranking members of the royal family and influential figures such as former Prime Ministers. For William, wearing the Garter badge was preparation for the crown later on.

For Harry, the absence of this title was a natural consequence of choosing freedom over duty. Even looking at the example of his uncle, former Prince Andrew, we can see the strictness of this title. When embroiled in personal scandals, Andrew, although still holding the title, was forbidden by King Charles III from appearing publicly in the Garter procession, only allowed to participate in private ceremonies inside St. George's Chapel. This shows that the Garter Order is not just a glittering ornament, but a standard of morality and dedication that its holder must uphold at all costs.

The difference between the two brothers now lies not only in their geographical distance, half a world away, but also in the prestige of their robes. William continues to stride through the solemn ceremonies of the nation, representing continuity and stability. Harry, though still a prince by blood, will perhaps forever remain a closed chapter in the most prestigious titles associated with Britain's millennia-long history. After all, the story of these titles is not just about royalty, but also a lesson about the price of choice: You can choose freedom, but sometimes the price is never being able to stand among those who uphold tradition.
